FAQs – NAQ-Certified I/DD Specialist Program


 

Why would I want to complete this program?

The I/DD Specialist program is uniquely designed to help professionals working and/or aspiring to work in the disability field. It features 80+ hours of curriculum within eleven modules and is housed within a Learning Management System (LMS).  Information is presented by subject-matter experts from around the US. It embraces learning, person-centered thinking, high standards of ethical conduct and promising program practices. NAQ promotes the highest quality in services and supports through leadership development and increasing the knowledge, competency and proficiency of disability specialists who support people with I/DD to flourish and live their best possible lives.   

How long will the program take to complete?

The program is self-paced, allowing you to progress at a speed that suits your schedule and learning style. Some participants may complete it more quickly if they can dedicate more time each month, while others may take longer. You have the flexibility to set your own pace. It is estimated that most people will complete the program in approximately 12 months. 

What's the difference in eligibility between a QIDP/QDDP and an I/DD Specialist?

To qualify as a Qualified Intellectual Disabilities Professional (QIDP) under federal law, you must have:

- Experience: At least one year working directly with people who have intellectual or developmental disabilities

- Education: Bachelor's degree in human services or a related field (as per 42 CFR 483.430)

- Documentation: Proof of both education and experience 

For the NAQ-Certified I/DD Specialist program, you must have:

- Education: 4-year degree from an accredited college or university

- Experience: One year of paid, direct experience working with people with I/DD

- Membership: NAQ membership (can be obtained upon acceptance to the program) 

What topics does the program cover?

The program covers a range of essential, fundamental and advanced topics. You can find specific module information here.   

Can I take the courses in the order of my interests?

No. The program follows a specific, pre-planned path and information is built in a particular order. All participants start with module 1 and progress sequentially, completing all lessons and successfully passing each module quiz before moving to the next module.

Do I have to currently be a QIDP/QDDP to be in the program?

No. Having the QIDP/QDDP designation is not necessary to participate in the NAQ-Certified I/DD Specialist program.

Does the certification enable me to work as a QIDP/QDDP in my state? 

No. Requirements for QIDDPs are set by each state. Often these requirements reflect the federal requirements identified in an earlier question. Check the requirements through the state agency responsible for overseeing services in your work setting. Your supervisor or employer may also be able to assist in identifying relevant requirements.

Is there an application deadline?

No. Applications are accepted continuously and enrollment into the program is rolling/ongoing. 

Is the application fee refundable?

No. Application fees are non-refundable.
 
What if I don't pass my background check?

The background check is a required element to verify that applicants meet entry requirements. If an issue arises, we'll notify you that you're not eligible for admission and provide an opportunity to submit additional documentation if applicable which may resolve the issue.

How do I send my transcript(s)?

Transcripts need to be sent from the college/university or a 3rd party directly to NAQ. Transcripts should not be sent from the applicant. They can be sent electronically to admin @ n-a-q.org or mailed to:

Do I need to have a specific degree to apply?

No specific degree is required. The entry eligibility requirement is a four-year degree from an accredited college or university. 

Do I have to be an NAQ member to apply?

While you don't need to be an existing NAQ member to apply, you are required to join NAQ upon acceptance into the certification program and maintain that membership for the duration of the program and certification. 

Do I need permission from my employer to apply for this program? 

Generally, no. This is an individual certification program and typically doesn't require employer permission. However, if your employer is covering the costs of the program, they may have requirements with your participation. 

Do I have to be currently employed in the I/DD field to apply?

Current employment is not necessary providing you meet all eligibility requirements including a bachelor’s degree, one year experience working with people who have I/DD and providing three professional letters of recommendation with your application. 

How soon will I be notified if I am accepted after completing the application?

You'll be notified about your application status after we've reviewed your application and the background check is completed. Background checks usually take a couple of weeks to complete. 

What devices can I use to complete the program?

The program is designed to work with most devices that can access online content, including phones, tablets, laptops, and desktop computers. Progress in your program will be saved regardless of the device you use or if you use multiple devices, for example, a tablet and then a laptop. Once you log into your account you can access the materials.

What if I have "technical" difficulty accessing the program?

The Learning Management System that hosts the curriculum provides technical assistance and is accessible 24/7.  NAQ staff are available during regular work hours, 9:00am – 4:00pm CST Monday through Friday, to assist with technical difficulties that are not solved by the LMS. 

What if I don't pass a test or quiz?
You have two attempts for each test or quiz. Each test and quiz are randomized, meaning questions will differ with each attempt.  If you're still unsuccessful after the second attempt, an NAQ staff member will reach out to troubleshoot and develop a plan for moving forward. 

Can I see the results of each of my tests and quizzes?

Yes, you'll receive a score result for each assessment immediately upon completion. You can review any specific questions you missed. Please note that questions differ each time you take a quiz or exam. 

What if I need extra help to complete the work?

NAQ staff are here to assist you and can provide additional resources as needed. Please contact the administrator to discuss your specific needs for assistance. 

Will my progress be shared with my employer?

No, this is an individual program. Reporting progress to your employer, if necessary, is the responsibility of each participant and may be included in the agreement or policies set by your employer. 

Can I work on the program while I am at work?

Each participant will need to have a conversation and understanding with their supervisor and employer as to any allowance for completing coursework during regular work hours.   

What if I leave my employer after my employer has paid for my tuition?

This situation is governed by the agreement or policies set by your employer. We recommend discussing any questions or concerns thoroughly with your supervisor and employer prior to application and enrollment.

What if I can't finish the program?

If issues arise that impact your continued participation after enrollment, please contact the NAQ administrator. We'll work with you to develop a plan addressing your specific situation and support needs. 

How do I contact any of the course presenters?

Presenters who have agreed to be contacted directly by participants have included their emails in the videos or course materials. 

Does the certification expire?

Yes, certification runs for four years and must be renewed every four years. Renewal requires completing Continuing Education hours and maintaining active NAQ membership throughout the certification. 

How do I renew my certification?

The renewal process is outlined on the NAQ website. Log into your member account and follow the renewal instructions. Contact the NAQ administrator if you need additional assistance. 

What's the completion rate of the NAQ-Certified I/DD Specialist program?

The completion rate for the revised program has not yet been established. The prior program had a 100% completion rate. NAQ is committed to supporting your success in the program. 

Will NAQ help me find job opportunities after I complete the program?

NAQ doesn't provide direct assistance with employment opportunities. However, having the NAQ-Certified I/DD Specialist designation will be an asset in current and future employment opportunities that involve effectively supporting people with I/DD.

What else does NAQ do?

In addition to the NAQ-Certified I/DD Specialist program, NAQ hosts a spectacular annual conference, provides webinars and other learning events, develops resources within the I/DD field and promotes Development Disabilities Professional Day called DDP Day - July 15 each year as an opportunity to recognize and appreciate those professionals working in the field of I/DD.
